Urinary incontinence is a condition that can be seen in many women from time to time. It does not always indicate a disease, but when it reaches the frequency and intensity that will affect daily life, it requires medical attention. Urinary incontinence may occur with a trigger such as laughing, sneezing, physical activity, or it may occur with a sudden urge to urinate.
Urinary incontinence may also occur due to reasons such as obesity, menopause, childbirth, chronic lung diseases that cause chronic cough, urinary tract infections, small bladder size or use of diuretic drugs.
For treatment, it is very important to initially determine the type of urinary incontinence. There are types of this problem such as stress, mixed, urge, functional urinary incontinence, overflow, temporary urinary incontinence and persistent urinary incontinence.
Stress urinary incontinence; It is the most common type of urinary incontinence in young women, which occurs as a result of triggers such as physical activity, laughing, sneezing, lifting weights. Urge incontinence, which occurs with a sudden feeling of tightness, can be observed ensuing a sudden feeling of congestion at unexpected times. The type of incontinence in which these two types are seen together is defined as the mixed type. Functional urinary incontinence is urinary incontinence that occurs due to physical obstacles that make it difficult for a person to go to the toilet. Urinary incontinence that occurs unexpectedly as a result of the bladder being too full is called overflow urinary incontinence. Urinary incontinence that occurs in temporary situations such as urinary tract diseases and drug use is defined as temporary. Abnormal openings, called fistulas, formed between the vagina and urinary tract can cause persistent urinary incontinence.
After determining the type of urinary incontinence, the factors causing urinary incontinence are determined by genital examination, blood biochemistry, ultrasonography, cystoscopy and urodynamic tests. In the treatment phase, lifestyle changes, kegel exercises, drug therapy, surgical interventions and laser application may be preferred.
